I'm in Scotland and 150k would buy a 4 bed semi or a 3 bed detatched with huge garden and garage in a decent area.

I guess I just find it hard to seperate the prices up here with the prices down south.

there is a 10 bed student house close to me, that i see and think wow that would make a nice size 4-5 bed for me and the family, it didnt reach its price of 150k at auction, and i cant help thinking 150k would probably be worth it to have that kind of space.

    just wishfull thinking tho.

I'm in London and the area I'm looking at has 3-bed semis at that price. Admittedly those are the ones that need doing up but a large number have dropped to around 175 since the stamp duty decision. It's not a bad area either - it's main drawbacks are limited public transport. Prices are incredibly variable in London but there are still lots of 'normal' prices. :)

  • I've recently been interested in a house that has popped up in the street I rent my house in.
Its a 3 Bed Semi detached built 3 years ago with separate enbloc Garage and is up for £190k.
What is so amazing is they bought it for about £250k!! only a few years ago and are gonna take one hell of a loss on it.
Of the 25 odd houses in our street only 3 have ever been resold since they were built and its just suprising me why nobody has snapped up this place because its one of the nicest little closes in Stevenage and very very reasonably priced compared to other property in the area.

    >OMFG that really is just a converted Garage<

Nicely done up for Gran, I would say. I wonder if she died in that bed?

I thought £355k was overpriced, but not too overpriced. But now I think it probably needs a 30% fall to get into the realm of value. Perhaps I've totally over-estimated the area and it's actually a crap-hole. I think the high-street there is awful, but the residential streets full of detached houses and lots of greenery seemed ok to me. And my friend has never had any trouble there.

    This is the house.

That looks like a decent place. Pity its in Morden though, although maybe there are nice parts of Morden that I havent seen.

Two weeks ago I would say around £300k for that place. Now I would say £250k.

Theres almost nothing thats appealing to me at the moment. Strange how that works - 18 months ago we were fawning over everything on right move, now we turn our noses up at everything!

This is the house I would choose if I had the money.

These are the ones that currently tempt me (rather more realistic):

None of them particular bargains, yet (and some have been on the market for over a year!). Maybe things will change now.

You really think £50/60k for a detached house with a 40"x90" garden? I think you might have been a bear for too long.:p

People are still living in the old world. I thought I was being generous.

So many people with houses like that can't stump up the liquid cash to buy a basic family car outright - and yet they are living in a house they believe is worth an orbital value.

Wait until deflation properly kicks in and the economy tanks harder - and our real financial position as an economy is more closely seen for what it is. Already we're hearing more stories about land valuations... with some even saying residential building land is "worthless" in some areas.

The area around that house, where my friend lives, seems to me like any pleasant suburb in outer London/Surrey that I've ever been to. Sort of boring but inoffensive, the type of place that would seem like hell on earth when you are a teenager, but seems quite nice when you are approaching 30 and hoping to have a family soon.;) I also occasionally walk my dogs down the Wandle as far as Morden Hall park and it's quite a nice spot. I have noticed though that people with "chavvy dogs" get a really hard time from the other dog walkers.

I live in Wimbledon now, and would be much happier to buy in this type of area. But houses of that size and with that much garden are £1.2m+, so unless I was lucky enough to pick up an absolute bargain repossession, I don't think I'll ever get that much space here.

Our rental house is fine, but I'd still prefer to own our own place. But I wouldn't risk buying anything over-priced as we will always want to return to Ireland if the opportunity arises.
