What Bank?

Hi - I haven't been around for a while and need some advice. I have been on to the CCCS and they are helping me but I'm not able to go on to their Debt Management Plan at present as it would require more money than my partner and I can afford. We are living off his State Pension and my Incapacity benefit as I've got a back injury which is taking a long time to heal. The CCCS have suggested that we open a new account as I need something for my benefit to go into, and I need to keep an account for Direct Debits eg Car Insurance, House and Contents Insurance etc. I usually bank with Lloyds and have a loan, a current a/c and a Mastercard with them. We can't bank with NatWest (they are one of our creditors) Barclays (ditto, although only a Barclaycard with them) HSBC (they closed an a/c we had with them a while ago, Halifax (C/A) - and I'm not sure about a building society after Northern Rock and Bradford and Bingleys - I'd like to point out that some of these are my partners debts as well, some are joint debts. The Co-Op bank have turned me down today even though I only wanted the most basic a/c. The CCCS have been very helpful so far but I'm sitting here tonight looking for alternative banks but all seem to be connected to the major banks in some way. I'm also looking for alternative work which can''t be as physically demanding as what I've been doing but although interviewed several times for more clerical jobs I just haven't got lucky yet! Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you.

  • Did the Co-op say why they turned you down for the account? Was it the Cashminder you were applying for? I would certainly appeal their decission as is your right.

Ooh I was going to recommend the Co-op!

This is a link to who's linked with who in case that helps:

If it's just a money goes in - money goes out account you're after then I wouldn't be too worried about the vulnerability of the building societies.

Martin said on his programme last week that we're all covered up to £35000.00 per person per financial institution in any case.

As Deedee says I think it's probably worth speaking to the Co-op again.

    Good luck with it hon,

:hello: Yeah that's my grumpy old moggie Franki - Plotting world domination probably! (He always looks like he's deep in thought, wrestling with a thorny problem to me! :o )

About 14 years ago one of my neighbour's cats had kittens, and they were all adopted nearby so I was always doing a double take and wondering is that my cat or one of his brothers? (I could usually spot the sisters!) Sadly all his brothers and sisters have died now and he's the last one left round here. :(

So we mollycoddle him a bit :o:D

Is that a doggie i see in your avatar? (no glasses on today!)

Yes, that is my Belgian Shepherd, Isla - not very good photo!
Your Frankie looks so like my OH's Fred - he unfortunately passed away about 4 years ago at the good old age of 16. We always used to joke that he used to moonlight for Iams cat food as he was the spitting image of the moggins on the tin!
    Best wishes
    Franki
