Amazon price reductions - refunding the difference

I ordered a textbook on 13 Nov from Amazon which was delivered last Friday, 19 Nov. I paid £31.49 for the book, so I was obviously rather annoyed when on Monday one of my friends went to Amazon to order the same book but found the price to be £24.23!

I read Amazon's returns policy today to find that if I were to return the item to them, I would be able to obtain a full refund of the price I paid, and then I suppose I could have bought the book at the cheaper price. This seemed rather pointless though so I sent an email to Amazon using the form on their site and a couple of hours later got this reply:
Dear Customer

Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.

The discounts we offer for items on our website do vary from time to time. I've checked your order (#xxxxxx) and found that we now offer a greater discount on "<boring university textbook>" than at the time you placed your order.

We are only able to adjust the price of an order in instances where less than thirty days have passed between the date on which an order was dispatched and the time that an item is reduced in price on our site. I have therefore requested a refund of 7.26 GBP to your payment
card. This amount reflects the difference between the price you were charged and the current discounted price. The refund should appear as a credit on your next bank statement.

Completed refunds information can be viewed when you visit Your Account once you've received a confirmation e-mail from us. Under Where's My Stuff? click "Go" next to "Open and recently dispatched orders" and sign in with your e-mail address and password. The refund information will be visible at the bottom of the relevant order's summary page.

Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience or concern this price change may have caused.

Thank you for shopping at Amazon.co.uk.

Just thought you all might want to know this - it's worth knowing that they will do a refund if the price changes within 30 days, BUT only if you ask for it!

I quite agree - preordered Halo2 LE with free 2 day delivery. I therefore expected to receive it a couple of days after launch.

I really needed to play it on launch day so I bought it at Game with the intention of using their 10 day return policy when the Amazon one arrived.

So popped down to Game at 8.30 in morning when they opened (my local branch didnt open at midnight unfortunately), got game, got home, opened box..............

....and the one from Amazon dropped through door. ::)

Now I would expect to get it on launch day if I paid for the privilage but to get it that quickly with their standard freepost AND it being pre-ordered AND being the limited edition AND getting about £10 off rrp was all just too much.

    top marks Amazon ;D

(you should see the look on the three guys faces at Game when I returned one of the best games ever made >:( :o ???)

Great tip. Always good to know return/refund policy of various retailers.
  • I've never used amazon before..
But just been searching for pressies, and there prices are very competitive, and in most cases are the cheapest to!
And with custimer services like that... what am I waiting for!?!?
  • Doesnt apply to us as we cant order from Gap Online, but they do this too! Order something and if within a specified period it goes in the sale, you can get a price adjustment!

Just a shame we cant order over here!!!

Anyone work in the Next Head Office: could learn something from this ;D :-* :P! Wouldnt I be a happy bunny! ;)

    GAP also do this in-store.

If you buy an item and it goes down in price - they will refund the difference within 30 days.
    Nice to save.
