Swimming whilst on period. Can I use tampons??

Sorry, I do not really have anyone else to ask and the leaflet does not say much but can you wear tampons to go swimming?
Will they leak or fill up with pool water and then not absorb what they need to absorb? I feel silly for not knowing.
I am sorry to appear dumb, usually I'd just avoid the pool but DD has a swimming lesson and I have to get in with her and I will have my period on Sunday.
I've not worn them for years after one fell apart while I was wearing it and stayed in there for a month. Come the next month I had severe bleeding and cramps which ended up with me in hospital and a few days later the bit of tampon came out.   Needless to say I've not worn them since - it's been a good 12 years since I've used one.
Can anyone let me know what they use or should I just not send her to the lesson. I bought some Tesco applicator types but there is nothing in the leaflet about using it for swimming. Thanks for any advice.

IMHO they do get a little waterlogged.
So don't absorb so well, so I wouldn't use them for swimming on the first day (as its heaviest for me) but after than I would, its not for long anyway.0 -
Thanks MrE, no it is not for long, just paranoid that it will fill up too quick. LOL. It is not day one so fingers crossed it'll be fine. Thanks for setting my mind at rest.0

I also agree that they get a little 'waterlogged', but for me they are still effective on any day of my period. I recommend that you remove it fairly soon after (like in the loo as you are about to change) as the excess water can cause a pink watery leakage which isn't so pleasant.
They will be fine for the swimming lesson, and you would have no cause to worry when you are in the pool. Hope DD enjoys her lesson0
