Tax Return Amendment

Hi, i've just made an amendment to my tax return which seriously reduces my tax bill for 2007/08 (made a major !!!!-up in the accounts - I knew it was wrong but it took months to figure it out). However the tax are still sending me bills for the huge ammount that I no longer owe, even though online my statement shows the new smaller ammount. I'm reluctant to phone them in case they think I'm pulling a fast one. Any advice?

I would call the HMRC and simply ask why there is a difference between the amount requested and your online statements. There is no need to go into any further details and there is little possibility of the officer having direct access to your Self Assessment tax return in any case.

If the HMRC have issue with your amendment they will be writing to you, not discussing it over the telephone in a totally unrelated call.

Is it possible that the bills the revenue are sending you are dated before the amendment was processed - they could have crossed over? I would ring them - they will be fine. If it is showing on line at the reduced amount it is very likely that they are aware of the correct amount- just ring to check.
