Driving Lessons

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this but I've looked elsewhere and can't find anything on it?!

After many years of being a dedicated non-driver, circumstances have dictated that I really should begin to learn to drive.

However the question is, what is the most money-saving way to do this? I'm pretty clueless about the whole process so I'm not even sure what's involved, let alone how to do it cheaply!

Does anyone have tips for this? I live in West Yorkshire if that helps as I have a vague notion that driving schools may be local.

Thanks in advance!

  • i'm not going to be much help i'm afraid...

i'm currently learning to drive and the only thing i can tell you is that i don't think there is a cheap way to do it. i've already spent over £1000 on learning to drive - that includes the cost of my provisional license, my theory test, driving lessons and the cost of the practical. i failed my first test, so i've had to pay out £56.50 to book another one!

my advice would be to not take your practical test until you're really really ready - failing mine cost me about £100 including the test fee and the money i had to pay my instructor for the use of his car for two hours :(

don't necessarily pick the instructor with the cheapest prices either - petrol is really expensive and running a car isn't cheap. if an instructor is seriously undercutting other instructors in the area, have a good think about why this is before booking lessons with them - it might be because they've genuinely found a cheaper way to do it... or it could be because they're not very good and they're struggling to find work!
