very urgent- save my sanity!

a few years transfered gas and electricity to edf. they told me how to read electricity meter- no problems at all until tongiht.
got home to find man had tried to read gas meter but could't get access to property. i am in process of transfering gas and electricity because edf raising prices so rang up meter reading co with gas reading. i rang edf to ask whether meter was being read because of transfer-they said no just needed it for new bill and so i said ok you can have my electricity one too.
rang edf back and a women asked me whether readings for electricity were right because my bill seemed too low. i said yes but would double check and call them back. rechecked and gave same figures. women said she was going to refer it to billing dept because it seemd the day and night figures had been set up incorrectly set up on their computer. i said you told me how to read meter and you had sent meter readers around. women said she thought they had been reading meter incorrectly and again it would be refered to billing dept.
meter - digital one which gives total figure- you press little black button and it gives you one figure (with rate 1) and then you press little black button and it gives you another figure (with rate 4) by side. the two figures add up to total.
does anyone know which is which? i am potentially facing large bill- do i have any form of redress? are there any calculators for working out exactly how much i potentially face. thanks

  • I worked for an elec company, do not worry about this too much, When I worked on the department that dealt with this there were two options of dealing with it, if we had underbilled either a small amount or around 3-6 months worth we would write it off as a gesture of goodwill. if it was a larger amount we would give a 15 percent discount for goodwill - and then give you however long it had been set up wrong for to repay so if wrong for a year you had a year to pay that debt back plus paying your new bills as normal.

Seems like it is edf's fault as it is wrong on there computer. other possibility is that the meter is recording incorrectly as prehaps wired incorrectly. make sure you get them to check which it is. hope this helps if you need anymore advice let me know. also worked on the elec companies complaints department for years so know what to put in letters!

Ask them to send someone round to read the meter for themselves.
