student in debt. help?

Hi, i'm a 20 year old student who has just recently started a two year course at college.

at the beginning of august, the shop i was working in had to close due to money making problems & i unfortunately lost my job. since then i have had no luck finding a job and at the moment i have no money to my name whatsoever.. not a penny.

the problem is, i am on a contract phone, which is £30 a month, i am paying off a laptop which is around £20 a month, and i am paying off a television which is around £15 a month. i have no idea how i am going to make these payments! the companies are already chasing me for some of these payments and i don't know what i'm going to do! i'm scared to even answer the phone to them.

any help at all would i would be grateful for, i need to get out of this mess. :undecided

Could you try phoning your mobile phone company and asking if they can switch you onto a cheaper tariff? This is assuming you wont go over any free texts/minutes etc.

Would you work in a supermarket or a high street store? Drop your CV into them or go in and ask whether they have any jobs going?
  • I could possibly ring them but even if they did change me to say a £20 tariff i still wouldn't be able to pay that, not until i get a job & get my first pay.

I am currently applying at anywhere & everywhere i can find.

Have you spoken to your parents? Maybe they could help you in the meantime while you look for work?
  • My mum is giving me my bus fairs for college, i feel awful asking for more than that plus she has money problems of her own being a single parent looking after me and my little sister.

Register with some temp agencies, visit bars (not for drinks but for jobs). Change the tariff on your mobile to PAYG or at least something cheaper.
  • It might be worth speaking with the student support/welfare centre - they sometimes have a hardship budget.
Otherwise it may just be putting every effort into job hunting - maybe putting notes through doors offering to tidy up gardens for winter, dog walking, tidy up sheds, babysitting etc if there are very few jobs coming up.
    Good luck
  • Sell any unwanted dvds/books/cds on Amazon!

Definatly check with bars, they always need bar staff/ticket staff/glass collectors and allot of it is cash in hand or you get paid weekly.
