Do I need to tell the HMRC that I will be doing my SA online?

.....because you won't be able to do it online unless you have registered - regardless of whether you use the HMRC's own system or a commercial package.Have you registered for online filing?

No you don't but if they haven't received a paper return from you by 31st October they will automatically assume you are filing online because that is the only option left to you.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
