Cake Decorations

My friend is getting married in a couple of weeks. She is flat broke so wedding is going to be really small (about 14 people). To keep costs down she has decided not to bother with a cake, but I know she is really sad about this and is just putting a happy face on things. I am going to make a cake as a surprise....BUT I am rubbish at cake decorating - and am also not very well off myself. I know I can buy ready to roll out icing, but then my brain just gives up on me! :o Is there anywhere I can buy ready made decorations (icing ones maybe? ) and where do I buy a bride and groom to stand on it?

ANY ideas, suggestions would be VERY welcome.

ebay do some cake decorations - bride and groom etc - as well as bead sprays "toppers" to go on the top of wedding cakes - much easier ;)

We bought M&S celebration cakes and bought roses made of sugar paste from ebay from someone who also does cakes. Looked good and all we did was plonk them on the top of the cake :D

PS - everyone asked who made the cake as it tasted good ;)
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?

M&S, Asda they all do cakes. If, like me, you are not a regular cake make, then this can sometimes work out cost effectively too.

And Ebay do great decorations at reasonable prices. Take a look and see what you think.

If you have a local hobbycraft I'd go there, they have bride and groom figures and cake decorating books, I'd have a free nosey the books if I were you for ideas.

Or you could get the ready to roll icing in white, ready to roll icing in pink (or her favourite colour) and a small circle cutter (or use a shot glass if you have one) cover the whole cake in the white icing then cut out circles with the cutter or glass and cover the cake in a polka dotty way.

If you leave a space at the top you could put a bride and groom there, i'm sure you can find them quite cheaply somewhere! if not use a knife and cut out a heart in the coloured icing and put it in the figures place. if she isn't expecting one I'm sure she'll be chuffed without the figures, you're such a nice friend for doing this for her!

(sorry for the long reply, good luck!)
  • Thanks for replies.....I have looked at ready made cakes and I either can't afford them or they aren't big enough (or weddingy enough). Did think of ebay but have had my fingers burnt on there before and am too short of time (and cash) to take a risk.

Thanks for suggestions though - much appreciated.

    Hi there

How about getting very small cake board (or a piece of card -cover it in leftover icing so it doesnt stand out)
make a ball of icing and place in the middle of the board...
Then you can either stick real flowers into it on the morning or get some lovely artificial ones to match your friends flowers(in which case you can just stick the lump of icing onto the cake )-the board is just to stop sap from real flowers getting on the cake
Plus artificial flowers can be kept..mine stand in my bedroom window

my mum made mine..and it looked likethis.. just what i wanted

No problem bellett! Even if they don't have any figures you like, you could always get a big ribbon to tie around the base of the cake once iced to save time on faffy decorations. I'm sure once you get there and see all the bits and bobs infront of you you'll have a million ideas come flooding to you.

    Thankyou ..

I have a clever mum :T who did my flowers, made the bridesmaids dresses, made the ties and heck knows what else :rotfl:

the flowers on the bottom 2 tiers are wired onto a cicrle of wire, but you can just make slightly smaller ones like the top if you are planning more than 1 tier..

One other small bit. You say that shes is upset with no cake so this will be a surprise. I strongly recommend that you check no-one else is going to make a surprise too!
