in Cutting tax
Hi all. I've had a read of other people's similar questions on the forum, but I'm not sure if the same answers apply to my situation.
Since May this year, I've been working part time, earning between £40 and £140 a week depending on shifts.
On the 1st of October I started a full time job on £24,103 a year. I have kept my first part time job, but shifts are purely on an ad-hoc basis as I'll only be going in during very busy times, so technically I'm still emplyed but potentially not earning anything.
I got my first paycheck from the new job on Friday, and my tax code is BR NONCUM
Here's a breakdown of the payslip:
Basic Pay: £2008.58
PAYE £375.60
NI D £145.21
Pension 130.56
NET £1357.21
Can anyone clairfy how much tax I should be paying and what my correct tax code should be? Also, would it benefit me more to either guarantee a fixed number of hours on my part time job, or leave it entirely?
EDIT: thought I should add, the most I'm likely to earn from the part time job is £44.16 a week
Thanks in advance

With a BR code you are not getting the benefit of your tax-free allowances. Presumably your tax code is being used with your part-time job?
As you are now working full time you need to get your tax code applied to this job as your tax-free alllowance is being wasted on the part-time job where you are not earning enough.
You need to phone up HMRC and ask them to swap the tax codes around. Then you should have a code of 603L for the main job and BR for the part-time job.
There will be no problem with part-time hours and once the code is sorted you will be taxed at BR which is 20% on all of those hours.0 -
Jem you say about 'tax-free allowance'. What is this exactly?
Also, sorry to slightly hijack the thread. I recently started a new job and have just recieved my first pay cheque. I havent worked since april this year. I got £480 before tax and NI (this is only from when i started until the end of september).
I only got a NI deduction of £2.77 and I paid no tax whatsoever. Is this a mistake or is it because I havent earnt since April?
I am on 12,500 a year if that makes a difference. Bad pay I know but its my first proper career job so hoepfully pays only going to go up from now. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.0 -
Thanks for the reply.
Can I claim back the tax for my paycheck from Friday then?0 -

Everybody has a tax-free allowance. For under 65 this is £6035. So you pay not tax on that amount and 20% thereafter until you reach £34,800 of taxable income where you pay 40%.I only got a NI deduction of £2.77 and I paid no tax whatsoever. It's because you haven't worked since April so you have April - September's worth of tax-free allowances to get.I am on 12,500 a year if that makes a difference. Bad pay I know but its my first proper career job so hoepfully pays only going to go up from now.
You will pay tax of around £107pm once you have a normal full year. You can put details into this site to get an idea.
