Costco / Expired Membership / Warranty

Options
I am a member of Costco and took a friend a few months ago to buy a car battery. I left my friend with the receipt. The battery is now faulty as it won't retain it's charge.

I called up Costco head office to check if my friend can go alone since they have a receipt. They said no, only members can go in and get items exchanged.

So I asked what if I decide not to renew my membership and I have an item which is faulty and within warranty. They said they can only deal with members and they would not deal with me.

Is that legally enforceable?! I am honestly quite shocked at this response as it is totally against the sales of goods act!

I would stand to be corrected, but is Costco not a trade "warehouse" and if so does not come under the same terms of SoGA as if bought from a "public" retailer.

Maybe try ringing Trading Standards, or Consumer Direct; -
    C D geo numbers; -
Consumer Direct is designed to operate from our 0845 number, so we cannot guarantee connectivity, but under many circumstances these landline numbers will work correctly.
    East of England: 01438 737460
    East Midlands: 01522 563000
    London: 020 8799 9200
    North-East: 01642 495600
    North-West: 01229 842203 020 31035167
    Scotland: 01851822401
    South East: 01622 626520
    South West: 01209 720333
    Wales (English language): 02920 367800
    Wales (Welsh language): 02920 367801
    West Midlands: 02476 786610
    Yorkshire and the Humber: 0113 201 3670
Consumers who call Consumer Direct from a mobile phone are handled personally. We will offer to text a landline number to consumers who call us from a mobile phone, and who live in an area that is served by Consumer Direct, because calls from mobile phones to 0845 numbers can be much more expensive.

I'm glad you posted this as I was wondering the same.

I am hoping to buy the Panasonic TV that is on offer next week (I think) and it comes with the usual 5 year warranty. So basically, it seems the warranty only remains valid if you keep up your membership. I did try to find out in the terms of the warranty but it doesn't mention this clause.
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!
