Income tax - new job

Hi Guys

I graduated this summer and currently work part time in a supermarket. I did not have a P45 so I filled out a p46....my employer tells me it may take them 3-4 weeks to sort out. I am paid every 4 weeks and was taxed at 20% in my first pay. This is the only job I have had in this tax year. I have been allocated the tax code BR CU M (doesnt like it as one word!).

As far as I can see this tax code is incorrect as it is used for people with more than one job!

  • Get in touch with your tax office. I had the same thing; they sent out a coding notice to me and my employer, after working out how much more tax i'd need to pay. Just explain the problem and they'll sort it out.
  • I would think you should be on the emergency code on a cumulative basis from the details you have given us and I am assuming you ticked box A on the P46.
This is my first job since last 6 April and

    I have not
    been receiving taxable Jobseeker's
    Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit
or a state or occupational pension.

If you ticked box C this might explain why they put you on a BR code.
  • Yeah I ticked box A when my contract was signed on the 3rd September. I did question my code with my employer when igot my payslip and was told it is an emergency tax code and it may take months for a true tax code to be issued.

But BR isn't the emergency tax code

It's true though, the tax office can take months to issue notification of proper coding. Phone the helpline on HMRC website would be the only thing I can suggest I'm afraid.

It might be worth checking with your payroll dept to see if they recieved your P46 in time for this payroll run. BR is the code that should be used if a P45 or P46 are not recieved. If this is the case then having selected Box A all should be sorted next payday.
