Night time digital camera!

I would like to get a new digital camera that is good for taking shots in the dark - no its for 'atmospheric' pictures and for haunted house weekends!
Any recommendations please?

Successful night and low light photography is as much, if not more, to do with technique as equipment.

Several tips on low light photography have been collected here

I would recommend :-

a) buying a good quality compact digital camera with options for the user to manually control the settings if desired (such as the Canon Powershot A610, available from Amazon for £194.47, review here at Steve's Digicams

b) reading the tips link above, then practising.

The beauty of digital photography is that it you can take hundreds of practice shots at no cost, improving your technique at a much faster rate, and much more cheaply, than would be possible with film.

Thanks - due to the nature of the haunted weekends I do need to use a digital camera, I would probably have a lot of great dark pictures otherwise and the digital medium is the best kind for what i need.
Thanks for the link for the tips, will read up on them and hopefully improve a bit - the camera I have now has no night facility on it so i'm after one that will be OK.
