My husband has a large collection of LP's that he cannot listen to anymore due to the malfunction of his deck, so I'd like to buy him a Archiver for his birthday. as I know absolutly nothing about the whys and wherefores of these things any advise would be gratefully accepted.
Ive found a ION TTUSB05 for £129.95 is it worth the money? It seems to do alot of things.
We have an ipod so to use it with that seems a good idea but any info would help.
Thanks shirleynoon

Is the malfunctioned deck part of a an "all-in-one" hifi, or a seperates system?
If it's a seperate, I'd say get a cheap but functional replacement turntable, and then you can use the "line-out" sockets on the amplifier section to record using your computer and a programme like audacity. Then you could save them as mp3s and use with your iPod.
It's just my opinion, but I think USB archiving turnables are a bit of a gimmick... you're better off sticking with a better quality "normal" turntable, as with most amplifiers you can record from them anyway.Russia is HERE0 -
And frankly with all the scratches, noise and pops, you'll get off the vinyl better off getting hold of a digital copy if you know what I mean
(after all you have paid for the music already )0 -
A lot of stuff hasn't been released on CD and might never be.
Don't archive to MP3. It's lossy and what you lose, you can never get back. Rip to a lossless format like FLAC and then transcode to MP3. That way, you get as much audio information as you can in your archive file. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.

This is true, but there'll be losses along the way from stylus to computer anyway.
If it was me, I'd be keeping the vinyl regardless. There's nothing like 180 g/m2 virgin vinyl LP's.

Just yesterday I was in the town centre and I saw just what your looking for, unfortunatley I cant remember which shop it was. I think it was a discount shop like "Wilkinsons" but not wilkinsons!!!
It was a turntable designed specifically for archiving LPs (I think it was USB!!) but I didnt take a good look as I dont own any LPs. It was approx £50.

Get the transcription deck fixed and do not go to mp3, wasting your time, you can download them. Keep the LP's running. As for the Archiver and ION these will just destroy your LP collection if you have been looking after them.0

Not really. You only pay for the license for use of the copyrighted material. You don't own and have very little rights over the copyrighted material itself. Even ripping CDs to MP3 is still technically actually breaking the law."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

If you are going to do it then buy a semi decent deck and digitise using freeware that records from the line-in sockets.Happy chappy0
