Debt not on credit file?

Hello, hope someone can help me. I did write yesterday but got no response.

I had a credit card with Tesco (RBS) and when I finally plucked up the courage to check my credit file, it's not on there! I admit, I have ignored my debts over the last two years. The last letter I have from that debt was from Nov 2006 and nothing since. Can someone enlighten me of what has happened? The debt was not older than 6 years so should still be there so I really don't understand it. It was for over £6k so I doubt they have written it off.

I have checked all three CRA's and its not on any. So what has happened?

There could be a small discrepancy between the addresses/details you have supplied to the CRA's and the ones that the accounts are recorded under. That sometimes causes things that should be there not to show up.

The debt could have been sold on where the company it has been sold to has not recorded the details correctly so it doesn't show up.

It just be that someone has messed up somewhere.

Make sure that your current and previous address details match those that Tesco had for you at the time.

  • Well the last letter I had was to my old address so Tesco must have the correct address. So whoever the debt has been sold to has made a mistake with my details?

So what is the suggestion? Shall I just ignore this debt until someone asks for it?

It's difficult to say exactly what has happened.

Do you feel capable or want to deal with the debt at the moment?

If you do then you could contact Tesco to see if they they still hold the debt. If they have sold it on then they may be able to tell you who to contact.

You could wait to see if anyone contacts you. That is up to you really.

  • Well I was hoping to do a full and final with all my creditors soon as I am being made redundant and will have some compensation money coming my way.

I think I will just ignore it for now and deal with it if and when they find me.

    Thank you for your help

I have this problem too. Funnily enough, the debt is with Natwest - owned by RBS. My address as per my statement and my name etc is all correct and as it should be, and the account is upto date and has not previously been sold on.

Just starting to wonder if this is an RBS thing and they just dont bother reporting to CRAs until default?
No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

  • My account defaulted a couple of years ago? Not made any payments for ages.
