    EmmaT,
Put your phone number and postcode into this site :
    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php
This will tell you your line distance, likely speed and show which providers, including any unbundled ones (Sky, O2 etc) are available in your area.
    .

just done that, get this message......hmmmm, what does it mean, what is this other service???

`Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
However, there is another service on your phone line (e.g. ADSL, LLU, DACS, etc) that would prevent you from ordering a new ADSL connection.`

The Other Service means that there is already some sort of ADSL on the line you entered the number of. If you didn't have broadband at all then you'd get a message saying the line was clear.

It's handy if you move into a property with an existing line, you can see whether the previous occupier had broadband as you may experience difficulties trying to activate the line with a different supplier from the previous occupant.

It could be any one of a number of things, old ADSL service, ISDN, Home Highway, DACS (A line sharing device) etc...

The best thing to do in these circumstances is to pretend you didn't see that, and try to place an order anyway with your chosen provider. If it's possible, the problem will be made to go away with any luck and you will still be able to get broadband.
If this route doesn't work you will need to ring BT and find out exactly what the issue is and if it can be fixed. If they say no (always a lie but told frequently) threaten to cancel your phone saying you only want to keep the phone line if you can have broadband. This should rattle them into action.

Been with ADSL24 (Entanet) for over a year on up to 8 meg service. Am getting around 6.5 most of the time with no problems. Glarryford exchange. (Near Ballymena) Great website and customer service. 1 month notice required so if it doesn't work out then you are not tied in.
Funny how the cr*p ISP's tie you in and the good ones don't:confused:
Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
