yes I have contacted the inland revenue and forwarded all the relevant documents.
Anyone who expects the NHS burasry to be a persons only income should try livin on it!! Everyone that i know has to work aswell, which is hard when we also 'work' a 40hour week on the wards too. I have found a job for four nights a month babysitting so im not paying tax on it but im earning extra money.
Luckily i have a prtner who works fulltime, his wage is paying all the bills and we are 'living off' mine ie food petrol etc. and i have 2 overdrafts for a fall back. Money isnt great but we arent on the breadline either. I have paid lots of tax from April to September so hopefully they might review this and give me some back!
I get 25% off council tax thats all, which i dont understand surely if im not supposed to pay it it would be 50% off as there are two ppl living here..oh well.. spose its better than nothing!

    thanks for all advice

emma, the single person's council tax is only a 25% discount. This applies to everyone living on their own (or if the other adults are students).

I don't know if sarah meant that you are not expected to work if you have the NHS bursary, or any bursary but my son receives a bursary and has been told he can work in addition. In fact, the same organisation paying his bursary also pay him to do work for them.

We get 25% discount becasue i am a student but we pay 75% of it cos OH works
  • I did not mean that you are not expected to work if you have a bursary - just that the income from the bursary is not taxable but any additional income is. I agree that it is hard to live on the bursary amount and that it is inevitable you need to work extra hours. Sorry if I was misunderstood. The bursary is receivable tax and NI free as an incentive to go into professions we need desparately and also to avoid hardship if it was an only source of income. Well done to you..!
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)

Thats right, but even if he lived alone he would pay 75%, that is the maximum discount given. Council Tax Benefit then helps out those who qualify but for those working and earning above the threshold, they have to pay it all.

sarah i know you didnt mean that i was just generalising meaning the government really i spose!or inland rev!
uni actually tells us we arent allowed to work too so it s a sore subject! it annoys me that they want older more mature student nurses, but older ppl generally have commitments dont they, yet they expect us to live of 5k a year without working on top of it!

i do bank shifts on the wards, babysit 7-11pm once a week/fortnight and nanny for a family four nights a month............OH still says im a "mucky student who should get a bl**dy job" !!!
which goes down brilliantly with me, as you can imagine (sarcasm there folks!)

    have a good weekend!!
