Local council skip??
My local council has an electric items only skip within it's rubbish skips. I take broken items there, otherwise, maybe try the freecycle route.0 -
Try a search for the name of your local authority, WEEE, collection.0

DEpending on what it is, some charities will collect, for example Emmaus have shops that repair and resell, you can try looking them up:

We've got an iron that has just given up the ghost, however our local recycling place doesn't take electrical items. Any ideas on how to recycle it/dispose of it?

All uk councils are obliged to provide facilities for taking back electrical and electronic items under the EU WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive. Check your councils web site. There might be a charge though some councils provide grace for the first few items others provide no grace.
See the link on your local borough or district council on this page:
http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/Environment/Waste/waste_home.htm
Also if it is less than 5 years old you might still be able to get it replaced under the sales of goods act especially if it is a good one.
If not shops are also obliged to take them back 'like for like' under the WEEE directive too.
