Question about repossesion and selling before you get to that stage

I'll try to keep this brief. Basically my husband and I separated in March this year. I continued to live in the family home, although both the mortgage and the deeds are in his name only. I have been contributing towards the mortgage (although obviously don't "have" to).
It's come to a stage where he can't afford to pay his rent and the mortgage, even with my contribution, I can't afford it on my own so are going to have to sell.
We have agreed that I will stop the contributions to him so that I can get a deposit and rent sorted for somewhere else to live. However this means that the mortgage payments will stop completely (he has spoken to his lenders and there is nothing more they can offer him) and naturally repossession is going to happen at some point in the not two distant future.
I have 2 questions
1. How long before repossession proceedings start (I'm trying to get an idea how long I may have - or not - to find somewhere else to live)
2. We are hoping to sell the house before repossession proceedings happen (market here is still fairly buoyant thankfully). Is it possible to sell it ourselves after the repossession proceedings have already started??
Thanks
