Change in job description

Mrs c's boss recently announced changes in her job at a staff meeting without any prior consultation with her. She is absolutely furious about this. Her contract of employment states the nature of her responsibilities but there is also the usual proviso that the company can reassign her to different work at its discretion.

She works in an insurance office and her work is a sales position involving dealing with renewals and also securing new business. Her new duties are purely to secure new business which is high pressure stuff.

She subsequently discussed this with her boss and queried what would happen if her colleague now responsible for renewals was absent and calls came in from clients wanting to discuss their renewal. She was told that she would be expected to deal with them. As her colleague is known for poor timekeeping and extended lunch breaks, my wife knows from past experience that she would have to take a lot of calls which would distract her from her new business duties and make it impossible to meet a target which she already feels is unacheivable.

In short, she has been given a new job description but is still expected to perform her previous duties.

Suggestions please.

In the current market, I'd be keeping quiet and getting on with it. She's in a sector that's likely to be suffering redundancies over the next 12-18 months and they may be looking to lay people off.

Regardless, she's not got a leg to stand on as it's in her contract that they can change the job. She can only do her best and if her main tasks suffer, point out why to her manager.

She needs to keep a daily log of how many hours she ends up covering the renewals line. When she is questioned as to why she has not hit the new business target, she will be able to demonstrate it.

She should also be talking about her commission rates for new business. Renewals is a piece of cake. New business isn't so easy, even on an inbound line.

    Hi,

I agreed with you. Any way, your points of view make me thinking about some thing for my project.

Pls try to keep posting. Tks and best regards
  • What you have stated the job role has not really changed in a great manner. Roles like this in this sector is normal. At the end of the day, it is sales. No doubt about it. The stress is high.

As the above, if she complains for doing a job she has been brought upon to do, she may see herself in the blacklist for redundancy.

CFC is correct. She keep a log on what is happening.

Worse for worse, if she is really unhappy - look for a new job.
