Sick after drinking tea on an empty stomach

Firstly I am not looking for medical advice, I am just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and what could be the cause!

For as long as I can remember I have a problem with drinking tea on an empty/near empty stomach, this happened on Monday at college especially bad.

I was rushing about and didn't have time for much of a breakfast but grabbed a slice of toast beacuse I knew I would feel rotten abit later if I didn't have anything at all (I get shaky and headachey if I'm hungry) I didn't have a drink.

Anyway a few hours later at mid-morning break at college I had half a cup of tea, within an hour I felt so ill with nausea, stomach and backache. It lasted about 50 mins befefore passing and then I was fine.

I have always been like this but because I'd had the toast I thought I'd be okay, I won't be doing it again!

Am I just weird (probably!:rotfl:) or does this happen to anyone else? What could be the reason it happens?

Thanks

Sarah x

    Could it be trapped wind?

Your stomach is presumably empty in the morning, and then you're filling it up with liquid.

I get really bad trapped wind sometimes, and I literally think I'm going to die.

    Thankfully I haven't yet. ;)
  • LOl.........well I never thought of that, would it cause sereve nausea though and happen every time?

Theres a mention of low blood sugar there too, I had a test for this so know mine is low which is why I am shaky when I've not eaten, Hmmm.....

Yes, trapped wind makes me very nauseous. I'm a martyr to it really. My mother is the same. Once I have a good burping session though, I'm usually fine.

I doubt it would have anything to do with your blood sugar unless you added sugar to your tea, in which case it would increase it, not lower it. It's probably not the acidity levels of it either, as tea is much less acidic than the contents of your stomach.

I guess it could be the tannin or something in the tea. Have you tried brewing it for a shorter time?
  • I don't have it strong at all and take is without milk, it looks like theres a few people that have the same problem though according to google!

  • This happens to me... but only when I had tea from the vending machine at work. It never happens when I have a proper homemade cup. The vending machine tea I guess was some form of instant tea and didn't have fresh milk.
  • Drinking a cup of tea to treat your upset stomach is no longer considered as an old remedy. The benefits of drinking tea are truly wonderful, especially if it is green tea. Green tea is an ancient beverage which is now used in almost all parts of the world.
