Separation and Mortgages

Can anyone help me my husband left me and my daughter new years eve I am receiving incapacity benefit and have been for 7 years due to degeneration of the spinal disc,I do not qualify for disability as they decided as I can cook a meal for myself I would not qualify.
However my ex husband is no longer contributing to the mortgage and I have been told that there is no law which can force him to pay the mortgage.I do not know where he lives now but he has told me he wants nothing from the house and wants his name removing from the mortgage. However the Halifax have told me that they will not be able to transfer the mortgage to my sole name as they do not take benefits in to consideration for a mortgage.
I have visited the C.A.B and they have advised that as I can prove that with the help of social services I can still pay the mortgage they should be more flexible but they say there is no way they can do this.
I do not want to sellthe property as my 7 year old daughter is settled and I feel safe living there.
Can anyone suggest any way around this matter I am doing my best to pay my way and keep on top of bills which are due but it seems that I am the one being penalised whilst my ex walks away freely.
