wrap/mat for sandwiches

Morning all!

I saw these http://wrapnmat.com/ in a shop yesterday, and they look a great idea.

You put your sandwich on the plastic side, wrap it up (sides in first) then secure with the velcro that's on the fabric outside. When you want to eat, it unwraps into a plate. If I can train the children to wrap it up with any crumbs still inside, it'll be perfect for packed lunches. At their school they have to eat at their desks (hall too small to fit everyone in), so it should give the dinner ladies less cleaning and they'll have a clean spot to eat at.

Now it was for sale at £4.50,and I'd need 3 plus one for me, but it's a 12" square piece of cotton with the corners cut off, leaving 'straight' edges of 6 1/2" and corners of 4 1/2", or thereabouts. (No, I didn't stand and measure it in the shop :o , I found the dimensions on another site :D )

Even on my ancient hand Singer, I reckon I can do this ;) I'm not sure what I'll do about the plastic, but I think I might cut up a freezer bag, for the prototype at least!

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received, but also thought some of you might like the idea too.

I saw these online a couple of weeks ago, and though the same thing.....what a good idea, I bet I could make some of those!! Unfortunately, my sewing machine is a bit poorly, so I haven't had a go yet, but I would be very interested to hear the results. I wonder whether a cheap plastic tablecloth could be used for the inside instead of a freezer bag? You could also attach a ribbon to tie it up if you don't want to buy velcro!

I agree with Muz that something like a table cloth would be better - the freezer wrap will probably disintegrate after a bit
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

How about a piece cut from a shower curtain (a new one obviously!)

How about a piece of magic liner - that stuff you use to line baking trays etc. Morrison's do a decent sized one for about £2 that should be sufficient to do 4 sandwich wraps. It's tough and it's meant to be washed and reused, and as it has a stiffened fabric feel it should sew well.

Thanks everyone. I knew there had to be something better than the bag! I will go and investigate in the shops.

They're great aren't they?! Really simple, but I'd never have thought of it ;)

How's sunny Eastbourne? My brother lives there so we come down a couple of times a year.

  • I know - it's always the simplest things that make you say "why didn't I think of that?" I just showed 2 of my DD's the pic on the website & they said it looked cool, so will definitely be doing some :)

EB was very sunny & lovely today - hope it's like that next time you visit!

    I think they look great.

I found them on ebay for £4.25 & that includes P&P.

Thats probaby cheaper than buying materials to make them.

Ah, but that doesn't take into account my secret hoard of fabric accumulated over the years :o And last year a charity shop had somebody elses stash for sale....well, it was fab fifties style prints, some red fabric perfect for Christmas, some lovely stripey cotton :j I didn't buy all of it...

For anyone that's feeling inspired, you could put your wrap n mat in one of these-
