Cancelling my gym membership

Hi everyone, basically I joined the gym on August 5th, upon signing the contractual agreement, I was not given my own copy to take away with me and so I am unaware of the terms of the contract. Due to the catalogue of errors on the administration's part, I no longer want to be a member of the gym and so wish to cancel. This is where the problem lies, as they are telling me that I am bound by the 12 month contract. Isn't the fact that i didn't receive a copy of the contract relevant in my not being able to cancel? Please I would appreciate any advice you may have regarding this however small.
Thanks a lot.

Gyms very rarely have anything less than a 12 month contract. What did you think you were signing up for?!

I've never known anyone be given a copy of a gym's T&Cs to take away with them – when I joined a gym, I was asked by the person signing me up to take a few moments to read through them. It it up to YOU to read through any T&Cs and if you had done, perhaps you would know what their cancellation policy is or if indeed there is one!

although I would expect them to provide them on request, particularly at the point of signing.
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

It would be hard for them NOT to – especially when you have to sign the bottom of the piece of paper the T&Cs are printed on! :p

  • What Gym is it? David Lloyd are 3 months.
  • The gym is Bannatynes, I was in a rush on the actual day. I guess I should have read it, what I would really like to know is that if they'd given me a copy of the t&C, wouldn't I then have the option to cancel whithin a particular time frame??

  • Hi i used to be with JJB gym. I didnt wanna do it anymore and when I asked they said it was a 12 month contract that I had 8 months left! Due to me being pregnant, I decided to send a letter to there head office and told them that this was my months notice and cancelled my direct debit through my online bank. I never heard from them again and have just told my mum to do the same thing! Its worth a try! :-)

surely u have a 'cooling off' period seen as tho u joined in aug?
  • I used to be with Holmes Place (now Virgin Active I think) and I cancelled before the year was up and they said all I had to do was give a month's notice.

I seems every gym is different though judging by responses.
  • Thanks to all for your useful advice, I shall take it on board.Although it seems this gym's policy is different as u cannot simply cancel with notice and they still want to be collecting money fron me.
