We are about to change the clocking in machine at work, We are swapping from one that stamps carboard sheets to a biometric one.
There is a debate amongst us worker if our employer is allowed to take our finger prints for this purpose or is it a breach of our civil liberties?

Are you in a Union? Have they been involved?
Has the company consulted you? If so what did it entail?
What civil liberties are you concerned they will breach?
Are there any safety concerns at work that would require the company to know who was on and off the premises?
What safeguards have you been given about confidential data being kept?

opps just realised post is in the wrong place
Somebozo.
Not been consultyed just told machine is been installed.
Were just concerned about out fingerprints going onto work network etc
They say it will be used at lunch time to see who goes in and on but we can do that with the old clock machine to.
No safeguards have been given about anything and we are not in a union.0 -
I would personally give that idea 2 fingers to coin a phrase. Thesre has been enough trouble about primary school children having their prints taken for library cards. Of course the employer is entitled to verify when people come and go, and i would comply as long as they left the old machine in place.
Sorry it comes to this, you have to make it a no go area, else every one will start going down this road. After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?0 -

I wonder if it's got anything to do with people clocking in their mates...
Usually at the heart of things like this is a small number of people trying to fiddle something.0 -

Theres only 7 of us work here anyway and no one really does that as everyone knows when someone is late and people do point out if someone late so no one can get away with that
Our boss just likes to waste his money on usless things instead of things usefull to us, Just seems a shame he has opted this for his latest play toy. Were all waiting for it to be set up before anything is said.0 -
Any clocking in machine when there are only 7 staff seems to me totally over the top.0

that is down to a persistant offender who is always late 20-30mins.
Such much so now they dock his wages for been late
he has a car and prob lives one of the closest and is still work, he has no excuse he just hits snooze on his alarm ever morning it goes off0 -
Your boss will soon see what a waste of money this is. With 7 of you its easy to see who comes and goes. I suppose he likes the idea of remotely seeing from his PC who is clocking in and when.0

My OH has a fingerprint log in for his computer. It's just a new gadgety way of swiping in the old way. I guess it all comes down to whether you want to create a stink with your boss or not. Personally I wouldn't think it worth it as I like to pick my fights carefully as you never know when you'll need someone on your side.
I don't really see that having your finger print detail for building access/log in is any more sinister than an employer insisiting in random drug testing or knowing who your next of kin is and keeping it on a database?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Electronic equipment is no substitute for bad management...
I used to have one of the fingerprint laptops; excellent until the guv needed some figures for an ad hoc emergency [our COE was killed in a helicopter crash] meeting and it wouldn't swipe...went back to logging on using passwords - much easier in times of stress.0
