Thats why im hesitant to have it done again as it might be worse ( i really cant afford endodentist)
I had to really psych myself up to have it done forst time let alone again and having to keep paying for each check just to be told to come back.
I was put to sleep (well sedated) and knew nothing about it. cost me a packet for the sedation though

Can anyone explain to me the charges, i paid about £45 to have the root canal done, why would she now be saying she can redo it herself for about £200? Is she charging that as a private patient? If so why cant it be done on the nhs a second time? would i need a crown if re done (not sure what a crown is or how its done)
Really dont understand the charges system.

It seems your dentist is trying to get you to go for a private option which is naughty. As it clearly needs redone it is a necessary treatment and if your dentist feels they are capable of retreating the tooth then they must do this on the NHS. Cant comment regarding the crown, they are sometimes necessary after RCT but couldnt comment without seeing the tooth in question. Your own dentist should have told you though.

    Hello.

I'm having problems with a molar as well, so would appreciate some input, if I may ask.

About 6 years ago I was having trouble with a molar. My then dentist said that if I ever had trouble with that tooth again it would have to be a root canal.

I then moved house and dentist.

In the summer my tooth started hurting. I went to my new dentist and explained that I would require a root canal as advised by my old dentist.

    1. He put varnish on the tooth to try and hold it together, rather than the root canal as requested.

    2. I went back the following week in pain. He did a filling.

    3. The injection points became infected. I had an emergency appointment for anti-biotics. He could not do any more work on my tooth until the infections cleared,

    4. He performed the first part of the root canal.

    5. For the second part of the root canal he gave me much less anaesthetic as he thought it would be the 'finishing job'. It was not. He had to proceed with more of the root canal and I was in pain.

    6. The job was actually finished the third time, again with not enough anaesthetic.

    7. The tooth did not settle and the filling had to be ground down.

Currently, my tooth is sensitive and sensitive to hot foods. ANother crack has appeared in the tooth in the last month.

I am obviously not happy with the pain and the traipsing back and forth to the dentist over the last 6 months. Any opinions?

It appears that your RCT has been unsuccessful but beyond that I'm not sure what you are asking. This is something you need to discuss with your own dentist or if you have lost confidence in them then you should try elsewhere. The RCT may need to be redone or you may have to have the tooth extracted. Root filled teeth are more liable to fracture for various reasons, if the root filling was successful then a crown may have been required to give it some long term stability but the tooth needs to be treated effectively first.

Get back in touch with your dentist or get some recommendations for a new dentist elsewhere
  • I think i would just have the tooth out to be honest, if its a back tooth then noone will see it anyway.

I had a terrible toothache in the autumn last year. The dentist said if he did route canal it would be difficult, lengthy and there was no guarentee that the infection wouldn't re-occur. Although it is near the middle, he advised me to have it out. So I did. It has left a huge gap that took a while to get used to, and I have to have a couple of days off work as it bled for the first day or so, but I've no regrets. And it cost less than £30 on NHS.
I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off :o

This is the same talk-through my dentist gave me, it's just a fact of dental life :(

Honestly, you're better off to have the tooth extracted, and if you can't afford to have a bridge now, maybe you can save up for it later.

I do feel sorry for you, I know what you're going through.

simple question to some lovely people and hoepfully some knowledgeable dentists...

ive had infection in tooth (lower 2nd to last)
waited 6 weeks for dentist app.
went in today and she said because the cavity is below the gumline id have to have an extraction. so i asked a few questions....

if i had extraction (next week) would have to wait approx 5 months before being 'measured' for a falsie. (i like to chew so i didnt like this option!)

i asked for root canel, she replied as its decayed from below it cant be saved.
BUT she can remove decayed section and apply crown.
BUT ONLY AFTER GETTING SECOND OPINION as may crumble when root canal being done.

    They both cost ~£200.
    What should i do???
(Parents are saying extract as it may reoccur)

Extract and save yourself trouble further down the line!
I USED TO BE INDECISIVE BUT NOW I'M NOT SO SURE!

Rich people tell you that money doesn't bring you happiness just so the poor people don't feel jealous.
