Where do you park your car?

Options
Just been reading an article about car insurance and it stated that only around half of people who have a garage use it to park their car, meaning that they are missing out on discounts on their insurance, and leaving their car susceptible to theft, damage etc etc thus increasing insurance premiums. This was an article by SAGA so perhaps the older generation just have more stuff in their garages so no space to park the car other than on the street.

Just wondered whether there was anyone who parked their car out on the street despite having a garage, but unable to do so due to accumulation of stuff.

Here's the article, not that old so there must be some of you out there with garages full of junk and a car parked on the street.

Sorry if I've put this in the wrong place, please move it if I have. Thanks.

We park ours on the drive not in the garage. But then we haven't got a garden shed. Now it's only a small car we probably could get it in if we worked on it.

It does rather frustate me though that we get no extra credit for it being on a locked driveway rather than an open access one.

I kind of figured that, I guess the older generation are just more honest, so they end up paying more. They must obviously have more junk in their garages too, probably accumulated from offsprings that have flown the nest so their car languishes out on the street and they pay exorbitant insurance premiums. Oh well...

Have you enquired with your insurer as to how much your premium would reduce if you did keep your car locked away? Why don't you ask and see?

I tried parking my car in my garage but every time I did it some g!t parked in front of the garage door and blocked me in. The joys of living on a housing estate I guess.

  • Well we have a garage but we also have a big car which is almost as wide as the drive with only a few inches leeway. AND we can'd get the car all the way up the drive anyway owing to a gate further up the drive (to keep the kids in) so we just park on the drive.

I park mine in the garage. It's all tidy inside with shelves and cupboards, to keep the junk on, so there is plenty of room for the car. Am I sad? ;)

If you said the car was in the garage and it was stolen/damaged in the street or driveway, would the insurance pay out?

We have a garage and for a long time, it stood empty (yes empty!! but it's in a block of garages about 45 seconds walk from our house) and we both parked our cars to the side of the house.

My car was vandalised twice earlier this year and since it's been completely resprayed; it's been away in the garage every night without fail.

The upside is that I have saved an absolute fortune in petrol! If I need to go to the local shops, I either cycle or walk as it's less hassle than getting the car out. Also, I don't have to scrape ice off my car on frosty mornings now either :j

I've noticed that garages on new build houses look really narrow these days and i read an article in the paper this week that said family cars were wider than they used to be, due to new safety features being incorporated.

I have a double garage. One half for the usual junk, lawnmower, bikes etc the other half for the car.
The garage door is only just wide enough to get the car in with the wing mirrors folded in and it is only just long enough.

If you have a dropped kerb, and a white line (free) , any vehicle parked on it are themselves UNINSURED. The white line has the force of law, and you can if you wish involve the police
