Made to measure curtains

Options
I need new curtains for my bedroom and can't find ready mades to suit so I'm going down the made to measure route.

We have 2 windows - 1 medium sized and 1 small and the quotes I'm getting are in the region of £630 all in  which seems ridiculous. I got the quotes from a department store and small designer store.

So what I hoping someone can do for me is point me in the direction of someone who makes good curtains and I will buy the fabric myself and hopefully save a few bob doing it that way.

  • If you're in or around Belfast you could try The Spinning Wheel in Donegall Square- http://thespinningwheel.co.uk/. I've bought fabric there, but not had curtains made. There's also Paragon in Donegall Pass, think they have another shop on the Cregagh Rd. Not sure whether they make up curtains, but they could probably recommend someone. You can get good quality, discount fabrics there- Laura Ashley etc.

If you go to the Cotton Print factory shop at Dargan Crescent they have a great choice and a list of recommended " maker uppers"

    WWWWWWHat!! £630!
You could buy a sewing machine, fabric and bits and bobs and make your own and still save money.
It just takes a little practice, buy some really cheap fabric and have a go - honest it's simple.
What part of the country are you? You might have a Dunelm Mills, we have one here in Stoke.

I was going to say Dunelm Mill too, they have the fabric and will make them up too I think. They're in Boucher Road.

A new little independent has opened up on the Antrim Road called Frame of Mine...they do bespoke picture framing etc but can also make soft furnishings to order. Give Andrea a call on 07956006660 to enquire about prices (sorry, I don't know the landline number)

I totally forgot about the Cotton Print shop. It's years since I was there and in fact I thought it had closed.

I'm looking for silk fabric and it's quite expensive - well so far it is :o - and the 2 stores who have given me quotes have said the need interlining ??? as well as blackout lining to protect them. I'd settle for something that looks like silk but isn't.

Barneysmum - I'm in Northern Ireland and as they say over here "I haven't got a straight eye in my head" :D so I would never try to make curtains myself.

BigCammy - I was in Dunelm the other day stocking up on stuff for the kids to take back to university but I didn't know they made curtains too. Will stop in tomorrow and have a look.

I've got the name of a couple of other people too who I'll ring for advice and quotes. Thanks for the help to you all.
