I would imagine it would be dated from when you send in your application. You usually have to return your expired passport so they can clip the corners and stamp it cancelled etc. I got a new one in 98 and had to send in the expired one which they just clipped and marked cancelled but the new one was dated from when I had sent in the application. Just make sure that all your details, enclosures etc are in order, photos etc as they are very particular about all the details on the pics etc, otherwise they will send back the application for you to sort it out, delaying your passport application.

Start from application date, AFAIK. Certainly if you apply BEFORE it expires it can be postdated to expiry date, but no reason to backdate it. Is there?

oooOOOOOOooooo! I never knew this! So does that mean that if you send in your existing passport 3 or 4 months before it expires, you will have 2 'valid' passports?

The reason I ask is that I've always been really annoyed by the ruling in some countries that you have to have a passport valid for at least 6 months in order to travel there. As I didn't know about the sentence above, it seemed to me that passports really only last for 9 years 6 months! But can they be made to last the full 10 years by doing this?

(If so, I have been getting cross for YEARS for no good reason!) :p

    Renewing Your Passport:
To encourage customers to apply early we now offer a facility that enables applicants with unexpired validity in their old passports to receive a credit, up to the nearest whole month (minimum of one month, maximum of nine months) in their new passport.
I understand this as you can't have 2 passports, but the new one will be valid for more than 10 years (up to 10 years and 9 months).

    1. Get it in now before price rise

    2. They have an online system ( perhaps to late if trying to get in before price rise) - good as it asks "intelligent questions" - avoids you filling in more than you need + applications is posted to you all pre -populated , just send in fee, photo's ( and any docs / old passport , as required) http://www.passport.gov.uk/_1_applications/1_contents.asp

  • oh..do you think it is too late? I need to rnew mine but know im far too disorganised to get it done via post before the new price occurs?

You need to fill it in online, they then send it by post to you ..to sign and return . so assuming the price is based on date it is rec'd back... its getting very tight

You can have two passports it is common for people like me who work in International Development who have to submit visa applications whilst travelling elsewhere. Contact Passport Office for details
