Loan To Buy New Car?

hi guys im having to buy a new car and need a loan. i have a couple of cards which i miss payments on the odd time.i want to know how finance companies check on me to allow finance before i go into the dealership and make a fool out of myself.i never have missed a payment on my existing car or mortgage .i also have a bank loan which i never have missed either.i`m worried that my cards may show up and spoil my credit rating.i have no ccjs or the likes.i had a card which i missed and they got me to turn it into a long term loan to pay it off.again i never missed this once.my car is giving a lot of trouble and i need it cleared.i have enough to clear one card off out of my way will it help before i would apply for finance. my first post here by the way. thanks
