How do I tell the IR I owe them tax?!

OK, thanks for all the tips guys - have just gone through my main employment contract, and there's nothing to say I can't have a second job.

Have looked up tax offices and there's one in the town where I work so might actually go in rather than phone.

I'm really hoping I can still avoid self employed, but if not I'm crossing everything that if I explain I've put it all aside, and I thought I could do it via a tax return, maybe just maybe I'll avoid that fine...

I think someone on the small biz board was able to appeal against the fine for not declaring self-employment, so that's definitely worth asking about.
