Student Loan: Repeating Final Year

Options
Hello all,

I studied my final year at a particular University and was given a student loan to complete the year. I studied hard but my tutor and head of year messed up my project thus putting my degree in hiatus. They deferred my degree and offered for me to repeat the year.

There is no way I am going to let them mess is up again. So I am going to use my paperwork to apply to another University to complete my final year. I hope to go back in academic year 2009-2010.

My question is will the SLC provide me with a loan to complete this year? Has anybody been in this situation? Please let me know and tell me if you managed to get the loan to repeat the final year and how you went about it.

You can PM me if you like.

Many thanks.

  • I messed up my first year and decided to switch to new degree course in effect doing 4 years at uni rather than the 3 years and had no problem. This was back in 2001/02. Cant see there being a problem as ultimately you'll be repaying the loan anyway. Good luck.

If you're retaking a year then no you won't get another loan but as you're planning to do it at a different university they might. Give them a call and ask.

I think that the only time you will get a student loan for effectively repeating the year is if the degree course has a different title. That way you can call it a 'conversion' or 'transfer'. I did this also when I messed up my first year.

The best bet is to phone them up though- as said above.
  • My sons final year of HND course was all over the place. He moaned constantly about the college and the tutors but I thought he was probably not pulling his weight and blaming everyone else. However, I have since found out that 6 of the 8 students failed the year and did the students the year prior, all having the same tutors I might add. My boy is now desperately trying to get on course to re take year but at another college and I was wondering if he could get another loan. You would think that someone somewhere would start asking questions with regard to the amount of kids from this same college failing and having to re apply for funding.
Thanks for the advice birduk, I'm so glad I read this thread now.
