  • I had a good look in our cupboards yesterday and freezer, and went to Lidl in our town and only bought what was needed and it all came to £28 so we were very pleased. The only things we need to buy this week will be milk and later a bag of potatoes. I have a brilliant panasonic b maker, so saving so much money there alone. Best gadget I ever bought:) thanks to these lovely people here who mentioned it. The whole family love the bread.
Do a little kindness every day.;)

I have to say i have been looking after the pennies now for years reducing energy bills ie:- energy saving bulbs, switching appliances from standby to off, knowing when i will be away for the evening and switching off the heating not heating all the water in the immersion heater just boiling a kettle of water and not overfilling.

Shop around for cheap House Car and all other insurances online.

    Using Cashback Shopping Sites
    .
Sticking to the shopping list in the supermarket.(If you have time check prices online of different supermarkets and get there deals instore i am fortunate to have Tesco ,Morrisons, Sainsburys, Lidl, aldi, Neto, Iceland M&S all near by.

Use petrol comparison price sites(find the cheapest fuel in your area)

I made a huge saving some years ago coming of a mobile phone contract at £360.00 a year i now use pay as you go and spend about £30.00 a year that really was my wake up call to start saving money.

Yes we are heading or may already be in a recession but with common sense we will all come through this and it is my belief we will all be better for it at the end of the day.

We truly have had it to good for to long.

  • If you have young children use ur local children centres and go to many free activities as possible, save loads of money, use local parks, check out ur local events in your area which are free.
With halloween and xmas coming up, make ur own dressing up clothes, dont buy new outfits.
Play games with your kids such as marbles and cards, get snap out, or matching pairs, make houses or boats out of carboard.
If you have a garden make a tree house or playhouse, did nt do me any harm when i was a kid.
Or grow ur own vegatables or collect insects and study them.
Go star gazing with your kids.
Fireworks night we always climb a big hill to see all the firworks go of in the area, so we dont have to pay for the events.
    Do a teddy bears picnic.

  • Obviously now would be an expensive time to have children, but of course we all want the fun that goes into making one, therefore don't buy expensive ribbed condoms, just buy cheaper standard ones and chuck a handful of frozen peas in before use

Sorry to disagree, but I think it will be for ever, though perhaps not at the tough level that may reached for a while. The way Western society was living was unsustainable and it is pay-back time. Soon, we will be making real choices about what is important and what is window dressing.

As you say, many of the best things in life are cheap or free, but we have millions who have no appreciation of this. What worries me is how those individuals will react when they find all their toys have fallen out of the pram.

I don't mind at all that you disagree so politely as I feel it is an important topic that should be discussed in another thread perhaps. Indeed I share your concern. However, there is this site to draw from and contribute to (which Martin deserves a medal for) which didn't exist in the last two recessions.

Agreed. The growth of the Internet makes it very different this time. Whatever problems people face, they can share them rather than feel that they're on their own. I know I'd not be faring too well myself, were it not for the discussions on the House Buying/Selling Board. They're a rough, tough lot over there, and there's plenty of pretty fierce debate, especially in the Ghetto, (House Prices) but they know their stuff!
  • Book reservations are FREE at Essex and Suffolk libraries. It may be free in your area, ask! They may not have every bookgoing but I am always surprised at what libraries do have, and you can browse their catalogue and order/reserve on-line. Excellent value.

Don't buy ready made sauces or convienience foods, its quick and easy to make things yourself. Don't think the supermarket is the best/cheapest place for meat - the butcher

Same goes for your local market - even if it is only one stall. The produce beats the shops / supermarkets hands down.

It'll last longer and taste better.

In my area it's free, if they have the book in the local authority area. That is, if the book is available in any of the libraries the local council fund.

If they don't have the book, but it is available in any library in the country they will borrow it for you, but charge a small fee. Still well worth it if it is a book you only want to read once.
