I don't think this is the right room, but please, please help

Basically I took a loan out with HSBC last year and for various reasons, I haven't been able to make any re-payments. A month or so back HSBC Solicitors wrote to me demanding £5,000 to be paid in 7 days and if I had any problems, ring them ASAP on a free phone number (I think it began with 0808? I'm not sure), I did and I talked them round into letting me pay £100 a month. This is where the problem comes in...I'm due to pay £100 on 25th September but for reasons beyond my control, I don't have the money and I was hoping to phone them and explain and to ask to pay NEXT month...BUT I don't have the phone number for these solicitors ANYWHERE. I was SURE it was DG but I have just phoned them and I have given my name and address, but they said I wasn't on their records?! Could it be anyone else? I know the number I originally rang a couple of months back was a free phone number...Please, please help! I'm so worried.

I am sure that they will be contacting you when your payment doesn't materialise.

You say that you are so worried yet you really are not helping your own situation here. For something so serious, you should keep all paperwork or at least make a note of the name and phone number of the firm dealing with the debt. You have only just agreed a payment plan and are defaulting before you have even made a payment.

  • They will contact you again.

I previously worked in a debt collection company dealing with letters from debtors and third parties, like cabs, solicitors, debt management companies, etc. I would say the best option for you is to goas soon as possible to a CAB or CCCS or cal Payplan as they offer free debt advice and they will assess how much you can afford and they will agree an arrangement plan with the debt collectors. If you cannot afford £100 you must not agreed with that as you can put yourself in more debt, if they call you advise you will be seeing the CAB of debt management company.

Do not leave for tomorrow as you may have to go to court if anything is done.

    I hope this helps

    Cheers

  • Beanie, don't you DARE say I'm not taking this seriously.

Thanks Mateus! I found the number in the end and they've agreed I can pay £100 on 25th October, but only if I make a token payment of £10 by 29th September. Will I have to phone them to make the payment or will they take the money straight from my bank? I gave them my card details today because they tried to take money out, but there wasn't much in, so it failed.

I didn't say you weren't taking it seriously, just that you really should keep any paperwork you receive for things as important as this.

You can't really blame Beanie, it was a fair comment.

You took a loan out and didn't make a single payment, negotiated manageable terms to pay it back, and still didn't make a single payment.

Only you know the reasons, that's why people make assumptions.
