Does anyone know what tax code 607L IS?

Just got my payslip and this is the tax code, nothing showes up on google or on here, so wondered if it's a brand new tax code? I know 603L is the new emergency tax code, but 607L?

603L is not emergency code - 603L week/month 1 is for emergency use.
The new personal allowance is 6035. Your code number gives you allowances of 6079, so you have an extra allowance of 44 in your code - maybe an allowance for expenses? If you are worried, ring your tax office and ask them to send you a Notice of Coding which will give you a break down.

Thanks, why they make it so difficult i don't know, why can't the government just put a list of codes on their website? if it is there i can't find it even with the search. Where did you find the codes too? Mmmm, 44 extra, no idea why i have that, will have to ask.

Could be an allowance for uniform washing?

Because there can be loads of different elements making up a tax code ie: personal allowance, flat rate expenses, benefits in kind, state pension, interest on investments, married couples allowance, professional subscriptions, recovery of underpayments for previous years etc and they aren't exactly the same for every taxpayer. That's why coding notices are issued. Contact your tax office and ask them why they have an extra 44 in your code.

603L IS the emergency code. 603L week/month 1 is the emergency code on a non-cumulative basis.

Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place

A tax code basically means what it says.

I get the impression that the way you're thinking of tax codes, is 603L means one thing and 604L means another, 605L means something else, and so on. It doesn't work like that.

603L means you have 6035 tax free allowances, 604L means you have 6045 tax free allowances...

Now I'm confused.... Ive just started a payroll for the first time (new business) and all my employees are on 603L, even though most of them have worked somewhere else this year. Is this still right - they aren't on emergency codes as far as I was aware. This is just the new code with the extra from the government from a couple of weeks ago. Am I wrong?

Did you just add them to payroll and use 603L automatically?

You need to use the details given on the P45s, or ask them all to complete a P46.

603L is the 'standard' code for most people this year - but don't assume that you should be operating this code on your new employees. You need to check the codes you're using are correct otherwise your employees may underpay tax this year - you won't be responsible for the underpayment - but your employees will give you grief for it.

603L and 603L WK1/MT1 are both emergency codes until a correct tax code is established - the correct tax code can still be 603L. More info here: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/emergency-code.htm
