Insurance Claim - Halifax

Hello i have a small dilema here that i need some info on

OK heres whats happening, my dad has been unwell now since Feb - 7th. He has been paying his mortgage as normal however he has not been working. He has taken mortgage payment protection incase of such things happen, along with life cover.

He also has 2 cars which are direct debit, again he has paid these aswell. Overall its over 10'000. To put you in the picture he is an alcoholic and has allowed everything to slip without worrying about his finances. Now he is getting help things are needing attention, which is what im trying to sort out here.

Hes been off sick since feb like i said, and has been hospitalised for about 4 months in total and is currently still in hospital. However when he was not in hospital he was still not well enough to work and was receiving sick lines from his doctor.

How would i go about claiming something like this?, should i claim both life cover and payment protection?. Will it matter that he is still employed but is not receiving anything near to what you would consider a wage. Dont know where to start with this atall, as ive never been in the situation before.

Thanks for your replies.

  • Ok Life Cover will only pay out if he dies, so you won't be claiming on that (unless you are looking to claim on the Waiver of Premium part of the policy, which pays the premiums in the event of accident of sickness).

ASU policies often have a period during which you have to make a claim, and may not pay out for drug/alcohol related illness as they class it as self-inflicted, but it costs nothing to submit the claim so I would get it in asap.
  • It isnt drug/alcohol he is off sick for mate, it is depression and heart problems. He suffered a heart attack, and his doctor said he is not fit enough to work.

Alcoholism is just the thing that is causing him to not pay attention to his finances. The life cover he has mentions a payout for when you are hospitalised. I will need to have a look at his documents.
  • were any of his illnesses pre-existing medicial conditions when he fell ill as otherwise he may not be covered

also there is a certain timescale these usually should be reported in

is the insurance Total Mortgage Payment Protection with a halifax mortgage?

Yes thats the one its £67. odds a month.

His medical illness was nothing pre-existing. He was unaware he had any heart conditions, however he has suffered from depression on and off for most of his life.

The reason he ended up in hospital was because he no longer wanted to live, was not eating. This is what brought attention to the heart condition.

    Cheers

Hi i would like to but in with a similar sort of problem if I may?
Someone in my family has just died suddenly due to an alcohol related condition. He was paying mortgage protection, however i have been unable to find any policy documentation. I have been in contact with them and all they would tell me was that it was a joint policy with his now estranged wife. She didn't even know the policy existed.
I have asked a solicitor to look in to it for me but in the mean time was wondering about he point raised in this thread re self inflicted illness. So some policy's wont pay out then? has anyone ever heard of this happening?
The reason I worry is that he had debts which will need to be repaid from his estate, which will obviously be more if the house has been paid off.
Also do these policy's still pay out if the mortgage is in arrears?, as it is by about £1000. Thanks in advance for your pearls of wisdom x
