Can you sign on after quitting work? (please help!)

I just finished Uni about 3/4 months ago. Anyways, I was on job seekers, but then I got a job at a shop. It's terrible money and distracting me from getting a job thats suitable for me.

Anyways, I've told them I'm leaving in a week. I didnt sign an employment contract (purposely).

Will I be able to sign back on to job seekers whilst I look for a new job?

Thanks ever so much.

  • Not sure but a 20 year old male worked for me for a while. He rarely showed up for work on time & called in sick regularly. Basically he didn't want to work and when I let him go I got a form sent to me from the JSA asking exactly what circumstances he left the employment.

He claimed he had left because he was unofficially made redundant, this contradicted what I said on the declaration I had to sign.

Not the same circumstances as you obviously, but they do ask your former employer why you left and if you left of your own accord you may not be eligible.
  • As stated in numerous threads already about this issue...

    Yes you can sign on.

You will be asked about the reasons for your last job ending.

You may be sanctioned for up to 26 weeks from the date your last job ended if you are deemed to have left work voluntarily or through misconduct.

Your employer will be asked for the reasons the job ended as well as yourself. These statements will be referred to a decsion maker who ultimately decides whether or not to impose a sanction.
  • what about if i get a temporary job for like a week or two and then sign on? Should be ok?

this sort of thing makes me livid. why hsould the job youre in distract you from looking for another job. If you are capable of working why cant you look for a job while youre working. You seem determined to be kept by the state and i mean us tax payers while you look for job. You seem to think Britain owes you but youve hardly put anything into the coffers yet. Like i say it makes me livid to say the least.

I understand what your saying, even if you have gone a bit OTT. However, the jobs I've been applying for have several interviews, days at (!!!!ing) assessment centres and stuff. They are also all over the country. It's either quit or quit - whether I get job seekers or not. It will be tough getting by without it though.

I've been in full time ed all my life so have yet to contribute to the country economically. In the long term, I expect to get raped by the tax man for tens of years to come. Still, I understand if you get !!!!ed off at stuff like this.

When you fill in the JSA claim forms you have to list all jobs that ended in the last 12 months. You also sign a declaration on the form to say that your answers to the questions are true and complete.

I assume you are relying on the statutory minimum notice period of one week for someone who has worked the amount of time you have.

However, it doesn't matter whether you did "sign an employment contract". The thing is that you have been working with a contract of employment. If they supplied you with written particulars that indicated that you should give them one month's notice from Day 1 as it were, then that is the notice to which your employer is entitled.

You say you have "told" them. Have you given them written notice?

Of course, they might be perfectly happy for you to leave with only a day's notice if that was what you wanted even if your contract requires more.

if you dont like the job youre in then just look for another job even if its a mcjob until you find what you want to do. You will pay tax the same as the rest of us, i dont see it as being raped by the taxman, its just a way of life.
for us taxpayers (hopefully you will be one of us soon.) i think maybe that i did go ott but but personally i have done some crap jobs myself and i really do mean crap to keep the wolf from the door. I am at an age now where i am a year off retirement and i can honestly say that i have not claimed a penny from the state in all my working life from being 15 years of age. and thank you for understanding my point of view. and i really do wish you well for the future.

I quit my job voluntarily and then found a temporary position for just one week. They paid me JSA immediately and they only asked why I had left that job and not the one I left voluntarily Maybe I was lucky.

Also from experience if you do leave a job voluntarily because It was just too Awful, I would strongly advise you to no comment any question you are asked as to why you left that job. You will still get a suspension of JSA but not the full 26 weeks.
