Told my mum...

Well, it's official now. We are definitely going bankrupt.

I spoke to my mum this morning and told her the news. Her reaction was not at all what I expected. She was supportive and glad that we are dealing with things and not just burying our heads in the sand hoping the debt will go away. She said that it's the best thing for us now and will support us all the way!

I really didn't expect that. I though she would be disappointed and angry as she's given us so much over the past 18 months or so to help us out. Perhaps she's glad that we won't be asking her for money now as we don't have creditors to pay so can actually afford to live!

I think she's also relieved DH and I are not splitting up as we only found out this week that my cousin is getting divorced after 10 months of marriage.

Wow!! It's all real now - need to get the forms sorted as the date is set for 10 October - less than 2 weeks away

    Difficult telling parents, isn't it?

Am glad it went well with your Mum.
  • I'd like to thank you for your post, it may help other people in the same situation be brave bite the bullet and tell family and loved ones. It's good she took it well, good luck on your journey, Regards MLSL
Busy mum of 3, so if my posts don't make sense or ask a silly question be patient:rotfl:
  • Yep, now we just need to tell DH's parents.

I'm dreading that as we have to wait until they visit us later this year (they live abroad) and we can't tell them over the phone as my MIL is not well at the moment.
  • I keep/kept mine on a need to know basis, I insisted we told the MIL about my BC because its only fair they find out first hand rather than read it in the paper or come from someone else (shes the type that reads the local paper daily and page to page!!!)

I think only 4 people know im BC (my missus, my MIL, my Brother and SIL). And everyone on these boards (shhhhhh, its a secret hehe)

  • Glad it went well telling your Mum. I found when telling my family that once I explained that we had tried every other avenue, they were very supportive.

  • Well done. Telling your parents must be really difficult.

I have made my DH promise not to tell his parents or family or, in fact, anyone - I just couldn't bear it, so you have my utmost respect for having found the courage to do it.

If my mother were still alive I would be able to tell her, but my husband's family are not the same...and his brother works in financial services, so my other (well one of my many:o )fears is them finding out at some stage.

    Stay strong

    Well done.

I'm not sure if I'm going to tell mine. We are going on holiday together about the time I'll have the fees together. I don't know wether to sit down her down and tell her while we are there. It will be a long talk though because there are other things most of my family don't know. The one good thing is if I tell my mum the rest of the family will know within a week so I wont have to have the talk with anyone else.
