Rates if house is vacant?

Does anyone know the situation regarding paying rates if the house is vacant? I'm buying a house but won't actually be moving into it until after christmas

I've tried looking at http://www.lpsni.gov.uk/index.htm but can't see any info regarding this. I was under the impression you didn't have to pay rates if the house wasn't furnished/noone living in it but this may have been before the changes in recent years

  • As long as the property is vacant of furniture you are not liable to pay any rates

So your grand for the next while, there is a consultation regarding paying vacant rates on domestic properties (like commercial properties) but I suppose it will be a few years before anything is decided
