Fingernails

Hi guys,

Just wanted to ask if anyone has any advice on how to keep nails looking healthy using natural products. Or if anyone can recommend a varnish that will keep my nails healthy and strong?

  • Olive or almond oil massaged into the nails and cuticles every night will work wonders. My mother had very weak nails which would bend, split and flake, but she saw the difference within a few days of using the oil and her nails are lovely and strong now.

I'll second Misty Blue's advice. I've used olive oil and it made a huge difference.

I'll second that:j Had the worst splitting nails in the world:rolleyes: Was recommended OPI Avoplex nail and cuticle oil by a beautician on a cruise, and my nails have been brilliant since:D

I bought it in Boots. It was expensive, but lasts ages. Definitely worth it:beer:

  • i agree with the above too. also try upping your calcium intake say yogurt, or skimmed milk (which has more calcium than the other millks as the fat is skimmed off) - i've been doing this for 6months and my too are very strong now.

Whilst skimmed milk has more calcium, by it's nature it has less vitamin D as this is a fat soluble vitamin. We need vit D to make full use of calcium in our diets. My nails and general health have been greatly improved by using a vitamin D supplement. I now have to cut my nails as they get too long, strong and generally in the way :D

If you take codliver oil you are already taking extra vitamin D but as we can get very little from sunlight or a normal diet I choose to take extra. Don't be tempted to just have extra codliver oil though, it also contains vitamin A which is not good in high doses.

My skin, hair and general resistance to colds / bugs etc are all improved too.
    Imagine my glee :j

OPI Avoplex is a great starting point. Get if from QVC - its cheaper believe it or not.

I keep mine in my handbag and am often sitting here when on-line with coated nails.

I would also invest in a qood quality buffer, One of those multi sided sponge thingamabobs. Gently sanding out ridges and buffing the nails to a shine will be better then any nail varnish for now.

I do keep mine polished and I ALWAYS go back to Sally Hansons double duty. Keeps my nails really strong without being brittle. However its really not the best base coat in the world when using dark colours, nails still get a tint to them. I just off shoot that by changing colours a time or two in a week if I can find the time
  • Neem oil works for me. Swish on first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Leave for 5 mins if you can. A big bottle from the health food shop cost me about £6.00.

Years ago I used to bite my nails and tried everything to try and stop. I occassionally used liquid silk wrap which I got from Avon. It says it's made from silk fibres which are supposed to help strengthen the nails. You're supposed to paint it on lengthways and then widthways to really strengthen them but I used to just do one coat like I would any normal nail varnish and it was fine. I think Avon sell it for about £4/5 a bottle. I find now with just using a hand cream every day my nails seem to be rock hard and I have managed to stop biting my nails (just).

You can also wear it under nail varnish but I thought it looked pretty enough on its own as it's a pale pink colour.
