Warning - British Gas Insullation Deals

Options
This probably applies to other energy suppliers as well.

The other week I looked into getting the cavity wall insullation done via the 'special' deal with British Gas. This is supposed to be done at a discount in order to help you save money on your bills.

British Gas and the other suppliers contract out the work to a company to do the works.

When they came out to take a look at what was needed and to do a quote it turns out the price for a 2-bed mid-terrace is the same as a 3-bed semi, despite 1/3rd the walls and smaller walls.

As it appeared that they did these works for multiple energy suppliers I asked the guy which supplier actually offered the biggest subsidy. He then dropped the bombshell :
"If his own company was asked to do the work directly the price would be
about £100 cheaper than getting the work done via British gas."

So British gas are charging you about £100 just to pass your details onto a third party, and yet claiming they are doing you a favour and saving you money.

So the result :
I'm now leaving British Gas (I know I should have done it before) and moving to Scottish Power (seem the cheapest atm and fixed for a year).

Also, if you sign up to Quidco(http://www.quidco.com/) and then do the transfer through them fully online. They will give you a £62 rebate via Quidco(http://www.quidco.com/mobiles-utilities/energy-suppliers/scottish-power/).

Good one Gordon, same with the Energy Savings Trust.
Go thru them and the traders accreditation costs push up the grant price. However you need a base price so once you have a figure, SHOP AROUND.

    Hi gordon861,

That's farcical I would look at taking that to a consumer watchdog. Difficult to prove. Makes you wonder if the same thing is going on with the limited grant system. It would ultimately be denying or at best delaying energy efficiency and warmer homes to some people.

If it is lead generation they are charging for it makes boiler cover look suspect too.

    Thanks for posting.
