Gift Bags for Teens Leaving Home for Uni

Hi, I am a teacher of some awesome 18 year olds who at the end of the year, NZ school year for them finishes in early November, are finishing High School and heading off to University etc next year. I only taught two classes of them, both very small and over the course of the year have had a great time teaching them.

Anyway, to get to the point, I really want to make them a little leaving home/ off to uni bag with some token things in it, like a few jokes that will appeal to each of them, I have a few little silly things I have collected up over the year, but not enough to fill even a tiny bag.

Trouble is, I don't want to spend masses of money since there are 10 of them. Anyone got any cute ideas of something they were given as a leaving home present? I was thinking of note pads, a couple of little jokes/ lollies etc, some distractions from study, (not sure what)??????

Ideas very welcome

This might sound very random but i found something on ebay a while ago that i've saved in case i need an idea to give to someone.

    In a little bag you could put;

Some Starburst sweets - to help give a burst of energy

A penny - so they can never say they're broke

Marbles - for when they have lost theirs

A rubber band - to help stretch them to their limits

A plaster - for when things get a little rough

An Eraser - to remind them that you can start each day woth a clean slate

A battery - to give them that extra charge to keep going...........and going

Some Foil - to help them shine

Crayons - to make their time away bright and colouful

A tea bag - a drink on you

A balloon - to help them reach for the sky

Some seeds - may their dreams grow like a garden]

A candle - the future ahead is bright

A tissue - to wipe the tears of joy and mop up the tears of sorrow

You could write a little card for each of the things so they can understand what it all means.

Very random - i know. Hope it helps a little. xxx

  • You could give them a copy of the Teens Cash Class from this site - I wish I'd had it at 18...

Chicken soup for the soul has examples in it where teachers have got kids to write down 1 thing they appreciate about each person. You hand out a piece of paper - they write a line - fold it over - pass it on, the next person writes their line, folds it over passes it on etc... Kids kept it for years and it changed their relationships with each other and their self esteem for the better...

You could try a journal in a jar - recycle coffee jars see thread for more ideas on that...

Other than that perhaps a framed picture or unframed art card that you think would mean something to them....

A nice mug with a message?
