I am not sure if this is the right place but i couldnt think of another place to ask.

Essentially I posted a cheque to alliance and leicester on friday but it still hasnt shown up on my account. I was fairly sure that normally even if the money hasnt cleared that the cheque would show up. am i wrong?

Thanks.

Never deposited cheques to A&L, but I can confirm that this is correct - based on my experience with other banks. It is worth giving a telephone call to A&L. Royal Mayl is not as reliable now as it used to be in the past. Even two my Recorded Delivery letters have been lost recently ...

Hi topcat, I bank with A&L. My cheques never show up on my online statement until they are cleared.

Also, did you know that instead of posting your cheques, you can now pay them in at any Post Office. Would probably clear quicker as well.

Are they "paid" in as in credited to account or just "received" by post office to forward to A&L? The latter used to be the case with Co-Op stuff I paid in which adds to the time before final clearing.

You should check first to avoid delays.

Pretty sure they are just 'received' by PO to forward to A&L. But you do at least have 'proof of posting' because they will stamp your paying in book to say they've had the envelope. I don't know if they then post a big batch off or if it goes in the normal mail, but I've not had a problem with payments going astray.

But they DO take a long time to clear things!

  • I once asked PO counter staff how the envelopes with cheques in reached A&L in Bootle, and they said they're driven there during the evening;so they will get processed the next working day.As a previous poster said, cheques won't appear in your online account till they clear. If your cheque reached Bootle on the Saturday,it won't clear till Thursday.

A little thing about being overdrawn and putting a cheque in the bank. It clears nearly right away.

Say overdrawn by £300, with a £500 over draft, I put in a cheque for £200, it clears same day/next day, you are left with being only £100 overdrawn.

Tryed and tested with my natwest bank account, not sure on others.
    Kind Regards

I had exactly the same thing. Posted cheque 1st class to A&L on Thursday but nothing showed up.....till today. I was getting a bit worried but entry on my online bankin today.

Watch out regarding the previous post though, as I imagine it varies from bank to bank. I paid a cheque in for a large sum, and when it appeared on my A&L online banking I assumed that meant it was cleared. So I then paid it into my savings account. But it hadn't actually cleared and I was charged icon13.gif

As I now understand it, although cheques are often shown on online statements as soon as they are received, and can also count as a credit for interest purposes, they are not necessarily cleared. It's easy to get caught out - especially if like me you use cheques once in a blue moon and don't think about it!
