oyster sauce?

Options
I am currently enjoying my Chinese cooking made easy book (although the recipe I bought if for isn't actually in the book-d'oh, but on the website (beef oyster sauce with spinach etc-yum yum yum-it is different to the one in the book-it doesnt have the spinach and mushrooms :()
Does anyone have recommendations for a good oyster sauce-I usually buy wing yip and it is lovely, does have MSG in it though. Can anyone recommend a good (easily available?) MSG free one? Or do I just have to accept that little bit of MSG if I am making chinese food?

Lee Kum Kee Oyster sauce is the best, however it contains flavour enhancer (E621), which I think is MSG under a different label.
  • Sharwoods do a nice oyster sauce but it is quite pricy for a small bottle. Unfortunately I've run out so I can't check for MSG

Pretani, it looks like you're spot on...E621 is MSG...

I use Sharwoods too and it doesn't have any E numbers on the label.

It does say contains oysters and wheat and may contain peanuts, nuts and sesame.

  • Thanks all-will have a look out for that Lee Kum Kee one-even with the MSG, is it widely available or is it a chinese shop one?
I tend to avoid sharwoods tbh-especially for things like this I find it very expensive but I will have a look at their oyster sauce :)

Two Oyster sauces that I like (and are MSG free) are Tesco Cooks Ingredients (in larger Tescos) and M&S. Neither are what you'd call cheap however.
