Annie, I got my denture in my late 20s :( Im now 44

    Like you cant have implants

Anways learning to talk is easy - a few days and you stop "lisping" Not that I think you do but you feel as if you are.

Eating is a NIGHTMARE. My denture is front and the amount of times it popped out when trying to eat anything you had to bite into wasn't funny. Got that for a while I wouldnt eat out and indoors Id take it out to eat. Mind that was a long time ago and dentures have improved and the one I have now is fine - never popped out and I do need to wriggle it to get it to come out when needed.

As for teeth out at night :(

You really should do because thrush happens if you dont. And oral thrush is horrible :( I never take mine out and last year I took the thrush and it took 2 months to clear and I was left with sores around my lips and cracks and scabs at the sides, felt constantly sick and lost a lot of weight, Not to mention how awfull I looked to other people

As my dentist says - hubby dont need to see. I just pop into the bathroom when any romance is over and the lights are off ;) And Im always up first so he never does see - even though obviously he has seen me without them (if you are vomiting - remove them first)

You will get used to them really quick if they are a good fit. A bit tight is better then loose as your teeth will move and the plate will loosen with wear.

Dont forget to remove it to clean it and try clean the roof of your mouth as well

    Well done brave lady.

Like you, I ended up with dentures in my late 20's and can honestly say that, at the age of 45, only about 7 people know this. My 2nd Husband never knew!

I shelled out at the end of last year for new ones and am having great difficulty with the bottom as my jawbone has shrunk so much there is no "depth" to them.

I still hate going to the dentist and can't bring myself to go back and get this sorted out even though I saved up for nearly 3 years to pay for them.

Although the dentist was really good at looking at the aesthetics of building up my lipline again, it just feels so bad to be "exposed" with people popping things into and out of my mouth.

That being said, mine have always been worn 24/7 and I've never had any problems with mouth infections. Maybe I've just been lucky?
I must go, I have lives to ruin and hearts to break :D

well that makes 3 of us (me included from Friday!) brave enough to talk about it.

I tried to find someone I know to talk about it (everyone knows how worried I have been about what to expect) but out of all my family/friends/work colleagues (and that is a lot of people) no one wears them apparently  .
Asking here was my last hope and as usual mse came to my rescue.:D

I will of course post back here and let you know how I get on with them.

My dentist recommended metal ones but after much research I asked about flexi dentures and my dentist spoke to the lab who said they would advise after an impression had been sent to them.
They agreed with me that flexi dentures could be used.
They have been in use in the USA for decades but only the last 10 years or so over here.
The big advantage is that they are very lightweight, useful for upper dentures and no invasive groves needed into other teeth to hold a metal denture in.
The difference in cost was very small. As I am having 2 crowns fitted at the same time I don't know the exact cost but will get a bill on Friday. I have a rough figure but have paid some of it already so wont post costs until I'm sure.

I hate going to the dentist, doesn't seem right, paying someone to stick needles into you then pull out bits of your body!

Not a job I could do but pleased that toothsmith and others can;)
  • If you want to talk someone who has ben there, done that, do feel free to pm me anytime if you feel I can be of help or if you need a little support.

    I've done it.

Sitting here with numb mouth wearing off.

root with 1/2 post in it came out in 5 seconds and loose wobbly one too.

My flexi denture is very light weight and horseshoe shaped no roof of mouth plate.
My teeth look better than before:D

If it were a pair of shoes, the right one fits fine the left one is 1/2 size too small, but as I am still numb its too early to say for sure.

The bit on the inside where it just start to go up into the roof bit feels very odd. I gag a bit if my tongue touches the bit at the ends ( at the back of my mouth) and I also lisp at bit at the moment.
I have an appointment booked for wednesday next week for adjustments.

I had a panic moment late last night and read the replies here and I felt so much better again.
Thank you again for your help and support :grouphug:

Any ideas for eating with it?
I was going to have soup tonight but wondered if I could manage bread with it?
For some strange reason I'm starving:rolleyes:
  • Well done you! So pleased you are happy with what you've had sorted.
I stuck to soft foods for a while until everything settled down. Soups, casseroles (soft meat), scrambled eggs etc.
I used to eat egg mayo sarnie filler minus the bread. :D If you feel like trying bread, do it! But I think you may find a sarnie uncomfortable to bite down on. Your chance to be very ladylike and eat an open sandwich with a knife and fork! :D
All may feel strange for a while, but the gagging etc will soon pass and you won't notice it at all.
I reiterate - if you have panic moments or anything, do PM me.
Having been there so many years ago, I can hopefully reassure you that all will be fine in the long run.
    All the best.

    Well done

Im sure the numbness is wearing off now. Hope you have managed to eat something.
You will soon adjust to having them in and your tongue wont feel too big for your mouth really quickly. Funny now I cant bear to touch the roof of my mouth with my tongue without my plate it (partial) - it tickles :)

You might find it easier to eat things that need a knife and fork - to cut into small chewable pieces till you get used to them but honest I never ever had problems with the chewing - just the biting into

Stick with them and you will soon wonder what all the fuss was about :)

i had partials done 3 months ago and they are fine- takes a bit of getting used to what you can and cant eat- and I've managed to lose a stone since having them done so there could be a not entirely unwelcome side effect for you!!

For the 1st few days, I lived on crumpets cos they were easy to chew on. Quavers cos I didnt have to chew them at all. Same with mashed potato.

Now, I am still finding out what I can and cant eat.

Oh and if you have a cup of tea during the 1st few days, make sure its through a straw but dont suck too hard!
