This is one of those questions akin to asking how long is a bit of string really!
It all depends on what type of rug you're looking for, the type of horse it's for (i.e. is he a fine thin-skinned TB type or a big hairy hardy chappie) and is he clipped out or do you just want to keep the worst of the bad weather off, and more importantly, do you want it to last for just a few weeks or several winters... quality is important but then if he's going to chew it up and trample it into the mud, save your pennies
It's a few years since I've had reason to buy one now so don't know what current brands are in favour or the prices, but I never used to spend less than £100 on the main winter turnout rugs, with a few cheaper ones as back-ups.
As to where to buy ... how about your local saddlery/feed merchant? Ok, they might be a few pounds more than finding something online, but when you consider postage costs for something as heavy as a winter rug then what you save on the rug would be spent on postage costs.
And, if you don't support your local saddlery you might not have one around to go to, so what would happen then if you need something in an emergency, which you always do with horses
Hope you manage to find what you're looking for, especially now the cold weather has set in!
Edit: just another thought ... I was assuming you were looking for turnout rugs, but if you're also after stable rugs, then you might also want to consider getting hold of some old woollen blankets from say a charity shop, or any friends/family that have any they don't want/use and put these under a quilted stable rug. Having several layers of thinner rugs is much better and keeps the horse a lot warmer than one big thick rug, plus you can add or take-off as necessary. The same applies to outdoor rugs, but only if you can secure them well enough not to slip off from beneath and get tangled in legs or trampled into the field."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

will come back to you three times as strong!

There was a load of rugs reduced in Robinsons a few weeks ago. All different shapes and sizes, stable, turnout etc. They were at the back in several large boxes.
When I got my first pony (18 yrs ago) he had an old fashioned green NZ with an old sleeping bag underneath. The sleeping bag was one I got from Argos for under a tenner. We (my Mum...I was only 12 lol) cut the zip off, cut a neck shape out and sewed the front together. It went over his head like a jumperHe was so warm and toasty (he was only 13.2 and the sleeping bag was a perfect fit)
Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
My local tack shop, Eileen Douglas (Berkshire) often does special offers available only via their website. The site address is: http://www.tackshop.co.uk.
I have to admit when the weather gets really cold I resort to using old duvets under stable rugs - they work fine.
Other than that, try looking in your local freead paper - there's usually an equestrian section. It's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.0 -
