Wrong Company Car Tax Band

I am being taxed on a company car thats emits 180 g/co2, and have been that way since being with my company. It used to be the case that we were changing cars every few weeks (dealer) and that was the fairest way.

However in Jan 07 I got a new car which is contract hired, this lasts 2 years, and the actual car is a 1.5 dci Megane, with 120 g/co2 and a list price of £14500 roughly.

If I write to the tax man, will they change and back date my tax, and also do I have o notify the company, or can I do it off my own back?

Thanks in advance for any help ;)

check with your employer to see if the have told the taxman about the changes in how they give co cars. It might be the company hasn't told the taxman of the change so the taxman will think they are still using the averaging scheme.
After that you can always phone the taxman and let him know yourself.

I knew that there were special arrangements for car dealerships where cars are changed frequently but never actually worked one so I am not familiar with the finer points.
Have you got copies of your P11Ds for 2006/07 and 2007/08 which your employer should have provided more or less at the same time as your P60s?
    What do they say?
If they show 180gm CO2 then it would probably be better to take it up with your employer first because HMRC are going to say something along the lines of that is what is on your P11D.
If you don’t go to your employer first then I can’t imagine your employer being happy to receive an enquiry from HMRC saying something along the lines of “Your employee, Mr CvPiper claims that the P11D you submitted for him is incorrect….”
  • Employers are supposed to submit a form P46(CAR) to HMRC on a quarterly basis to inform them of changes to company cars.

As others have said, check with employer first to see if this has happened, and if not, ask them to inform HMRC accordingly. You should then get a change in your tax code and a tax repayment.
