  • There's an old thread about this somewhere already - but it included a lot of comments from people who had misread the qualifying conditions and thought it covered jobseekers in general (which of course it doesn't) - with predictable negative comments.

So a new thread, and fresh start, seems a good idea.

The scheme is designed to help those who may need extra assistance - full details (direct link) are at http://www.helpscheme.co.uk/en/home/index.php.

It's not all free, even if you are over 75 etc. Many will have to pay £40 towards the costs - which, if all you need is a set-top box, is not a good deal - as the box may only cost £15 or so and can be easily installed diy.

But the installation service is more than just fitting a box - and it is free in certain circumstances.

A key factor to consider if you think you, or someone you know, may qualify is that the free installation only fully kicks in (I think) about 6 months before your area 'switches off' the analogue signal (varies around the country).

So it may not apply, yet, to your area and if you want installation now, you'll have to pay in the normal way. Definitely worth checking before buying that set-top box though. There's a freephone number for enquiries - 0800 408 5900
