I was with lloyds years ago in the 1980s and they were crap. Moved to Halifax in 1994 and they were OK until they become HBOS in 2001.

What value has the name HBOS got anyway?

Halifax and Bank of Scotland became HBOS Group. Big deal.

Lloyds TSB seems to have a much higher profile, and one which doesn't to me, at this moment in time, seem to have any value in amalgamating it with HBOS.

Just take it over and keep the Halifax brand within the organisation, and maybe Bank of Scotland too. Although RBS rebranded much of ABN AMRO stuff to RBS, so how much value in a name - even one steeped in history?

    LOL trev - EXCELLENT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl: :T

    10/10
  • And to think that there was a time when Halifax's James Crosby and Bank of Scotland were arguing about whether the HQ of this world beating new institution should be in Yorkshire or Edinburgh.

(The HBOS name was another result of the stubborness on both sides.)

Nationwide BS has just closed half its mortgage processing centres, so I expect fear will be stalking the HBOS employees.

As a long term Lloyds customer I used to be rather smug about the quicker service - but perhaps we'll get swamped when the branch closures get underway :(.

    Silly, irrelevant question.

Is the new combined institution actually better capitalised, or just bigger?

Funnily enough my family have been with BoS all my life - until the merger with Halifax - then customer care went seriously downhill. After that we all moved accounts.
"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.
"I think I'll become an alcoholic," said Betty.

Halifax is a strong brand in the UK for mortgages I reckon, possibly for savings too.

BoS - no idea of their rep north of the border. Scots had a good reputation for fiscal prudence until recently. No idea what changed.

Lloyds TSB - big brand name in current accounts. I guess people would trust the brand for financial services in general.

Cheltenham and Gloucester - Dead in the water

    Clerical Medical - Maybe ditto???

St James's Place PLC - No idea.

so god knows what it will be like now the likes of LloydsTSB are involved.

I used to bank with TSB many moons ago, but after receiving really bad advice from them as an 18 year old  I closed my account and went with Halifax where I've never had any problems at all.

TSB were a Toytown bank and nothing will make me give them my custom.

Guess it's time to look for another Bank - although I don't relish the thought of sorting out my wages and direct debits. :(

Yeah. I hope the press pick up on it and arrange to publish it. Could cheer the City and traders up for a day and stop meltdown. It is top-notch.
